About the Volubilis & Meknes Imperial History
This is the best history day in northern Morocco and it fits comfortably into one loop. Volubilis was the Roman capital of Mauretania Tingitana, and what survives is unusually generous — a triumphal arch, a basilica, and floor mosaics still lying in the open air where the villas stood, with storks nesting on the columns above them.
From there the road climbs to Moulay Idriss, the whitewashed hill town that is the holiest place in the country, before dropping into Meknes. Moulay Ismail built his capital here in the seventeenth century with monumental gates, twenty kilometres of walls, and granaries and stables designed to hold twelve thousand horses. Seen in that order the day runs from Rome to the Alaouites in about eighty kilometres.
