§01 The experience

Chefchaouen is about four hours north of Fez through the Rif Mountains, and it is worth every one of them. The town was founded in 1471, filled with Andalusian refugees, and painted blue — depending on who you ask, to repel mosquitoes, to stay cool, or because a Jewish community in the 1930s brought the custom with them. Nobody agrees, and the lanes are beautiful regardless.

We leave Fez early in a private air-conditioned vehicle so you arrive with the morning still in front of you. The drive is good in its own right: olive terraces, cork oak, and the long climb into the Rif with a stop for coffee and a view.

In town you have four to five hours on foot. Plaza Uta el-Hammam and the red kasbah; the washing pools at Ras el-Maa, where women still beat laundry on the stones; the weavers’ lane; and the blue stairways everybody comes for — we will show you the ones that are not queued at. If you have the legs, the climb to the Spanish Mosque above the town takes about thirty minutes and gives you Chefchaouen whole, best in the late afternoon.

Then back to Fez for dinner. It is a long day, roughly ten hours door to door, and it is the single most requested trip we run.

§05 Questions

How long is the drive?

About 3.5 to 4 hours each way on good roads. The Rif section is winding, so tell us if anyone gets carsick and we will stop more often.

Do we get a guide in Chefchaouen?

Your driver is with you all day and the town is small and easy to wander. If you would like a licensed local walking guide for two hours, we can arrange one for around 350 MAD.

Is it too much for one day?

It is a long day, but a well-paced one. If you would rather sleep there, we also run it as an overnight — just ask.

Is it suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes. The medina is hilly but the distances are short, and the vehicle is never far. The Spanish Mosque climb is optional.

What is the best time of year?

Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer is hot but bearable at altitude, and winter is green, quiet and sometimes wet — bring a jacket.

Do I pay now?

No. Reserve now and pay your driver on the day.
