About the Sahara Express — 2 Days
Two days is the shortest honest way to reach Erg Chebbi from Fez and still have time in the sand. The drive south is long but never dull — cedar forest and Barbary macaques in the Middle Atlas, the switchbacks down to the Ziz Gorges, then the palmeries of the Tafilalet strung along the riverbed for a hundred kilometres before the dunes appear.
You reach Merzouga in time to swap the vehicle for a camel and ride out to camp as the light goes. The night is the point of the trip: dinner under the dunes, drums around a fire, and a sky with no light pollution for hundreds of kilometres. You climb the ridge for sunrise, then head back north the next morning.
Your itinerary, day by day
Fez to the Middle Atlas
South through Ifrane and the cedar forest of Azrou, with a stop for the Barbary macaques.
Ziz Gorges and the palmery
Over the Tizi n’Talghemt pass, then the long green ribbon of the Ziz Valley towards Erfoud.
Camel trek into Erg Chebbi
Meet your camels at the edge of the sand and ride out to camp for sunset over the dunes.
Night in the desert camp
Tagine dinner, Berber drums around the fire and a night under an unobstructed sky.
Sunrise on the ridge
Climb the high dune for first light, then breakfast at camp before riding back out.
Return to Fez
North again through the Ziz Valley and the Atlas, arriving in Fez in the evening.
