The Jewish History of Fez

Fez has one of the oldest and most significant Jewish histories of any city in Morocco. The Jewish community of Fez dates back over a thousand years, with major expansions following the expulsion of Jews from Andalusia in 1492, when thousands of Sephardic families settled in the city and brought with them a distinctive cultural and intellectual tradition that shaped Fez’s architecture, cuisine, commerce, and scholarship for centuries.

The Mellah — Fez’s historic Jewish quarter, established in the 15th century — is one of the oldest Jewish neighbourhoods in North Africa. It sits directly adjacent to the royal palace and reflects the complex relationship between the Moroccan Jewish community and the Makhzen (the royal court): a relationship defined by both protection and separation, trade and tension, deep cultural exchange and distinct communal identity. Today the Mellah is a neighbourhood in transition, but its synagogues, cemeteries, and merchant houses remain as powerful testimony to the community that built it.

Sites Visited on the Tour

The Jewish Heritage tour visits the Mellah’s main square, its historic covered market, and several of the remaining synagogues — including Ibn Danan, one of the finest surviving Sephardic synagogues in Morocco, with its beautifully restored interior of carved plasterwork and painted wooden galleries. The tour also visits the Jewish cemetery, one of the largest in Morocco, and explains the burial traditions and symbolic vocabulary of the Moroccan Jewish community. Your guide contextualises each site within the broader history of Jewish-Muslim coexistence and the waves of emigration — to Israel, France, and Canada — that transformed the community in the 20th century.

Who This Tour Is For

This tour is designed for travellers with a personal, historical, or cultural connection to Moroccan Jewish heritage, as well as anyone curious about the pluralistic religious history of Fez. It is conducted with care and respect for both the Jewish heritage and the current Muslim residents of the Mellah. The tour runs approximately two and a half hours and is available as a standalone experience or combined with a broader Medina walking tour.
