About the Grand Dunes Journey — 3 Days
The third day is what changes this trip. Instead of turning straight back after one night, you keep the desert for a full day — time for the nomad families who still live on the hamada, the black volcanic desert around Khamlia, the Gnawa musicians whose ancestors came north across the Sahara, and a proper afternoon of sandboarding before the second night in camp.
The route south is the classic one: cedar forest and macaques in the Middle Atlas, the pass at Tizi n’Talghemt, the Ziz Gorges and the endless palmery of the Tafilalet. You travel privately with your own driver, so the stops are yours to lengthen or skip, and the camp is booked exclusively for your party.
Your itinerary, day by day
Fez to the Ziz Valley
Ifrane, the cedar forest and the macaques, then over the pass and down the Ziz Gorges.
Sunset camel trek
Arrive at Merzouga, ride into Erg Chebbi and reach camp as the dunes turn red.
The desert in full
Nomad families on the hamada, the black desert at Khamlia and Gnawa music in the village.
Sandboarding and a second night
An afternoon on the high dunes, then dinner and drums back at camp under the stars.
Sunrise and the road north
First light from the ridge, breakfast at camp, then back through the palmery.
Return to Fez
North through the Atlas with stops on the way, arriving in Fez in the evening.
