Walking as the Only Way to Know Fez

The Medina of Fez cannot be experienced by car, by organised bus, or by wandering alone with a map on your phone. It must be walked — slowly, with someone who knows it. The streets are too dense, too layered, and too alive for any other approach. A private walking tour gives you both the pace and the knowledge to make sense of what you’re seeing, turning what might otherwise feel like an overwhelming maze into one of the most coherent and fascinating urban environments on earth.

The Medina of Fez el-Bali covers roughly 400 hectares and contains an estimated 9,400 streets and alleyways — more than any other medieval city in the world. It has been continuously inhabited since the 9th century. Inside its walls you will find the University of Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 AD and widely recognised as the oldest continuously operating university in the world, as well as the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Chouara tanneries, the Attarine souk, the Moulay Idriss II shrine, and hundreds of anonymous but breathtaking courtyards hidden behind unmarked wooden doors.

Tour Options and Routes

Our walking tours are available in half-day (three to four hours) and full-day (six to seven hours) formats. The half-day tour covers the essential landmarks and neighbourhoods of Fez el-Bali, including the major souks, the tanneries viewpoint, the Karaouine mosque exterior, and at least one medresa. The full-day tour adds the Andalusian quarter on the east bank of the Oued Fez, the Mellah (Jewish quarter), the 20th-century Ville Nouvelle, and a deeper exploration of specific craft districts based on your interests. All routes are designed to balance the famous sites with the quieter back lanes that most visitors never reach.

Group Size and Private Experience

All walking tours are private. You will never be grouped with other travellers you haven’t met. Group sizes are capped at eight people for half-day tours and six for full-day tours to maintain access to smaller spaces. Tours are available every day of the week with flexible start times — early morning departures are recommended in summer to avoid the midday heat.
