About the Fez Craftsmanship Trail
Fez has been Morocco’s workshop city for more than a thousand years, and most of those trades are still practised within a few hundred metres of each other. This trail takes you through the working quarters rather than the showrooms: the mosaic yards where zellige tiles are chipped by hand, the brass souk you hear before you see, the looms of the weavers and the dye pits of the tanneries.
You meet the craftspeople at their benches, watch each stage of the process and learn what separates a good piece from a tourist piece — how to read a knot count, judge a glaze, or tell hand-cut tile from moulded. Nothing is staged and there is no obligation to buy, though your guide will happily help you negotiate if you find something you love.

Meet at your riad
Your guide explains the guild system that still organises the medina by trade.
The zellige yard
Watch tiles cut by hand with a hammer and chisel, and see how a geometric panel is assembled face-down.
Seffarine Square
The brass and copper quarter, where pots are still beaten to shape in the open air.
Weavers and cedar carvers
Silk and agave looms, then the woodworkers who supply the doors and ceilings of the old city.
Chouara tanneries
The dye pits from a terrace above, with the full leather process explained from hide to babouche.
Back to your riad
Return on foot with your guide, or stay on in the souks with their recommendations.
