About the Blue City Escape
Chefchaouen sits four hours north of Fez in the Rif Mountains, and the drive is half the pleasure — olive terraces, market towns and a long climb into cooler air. The town itself is small enough to cover on foot in an afternoon, which is why it works as a day trip rather than an overnight for most people.
You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver, so the timings bend around you. Most travellers want the medina in the softer late-morning light, lunch on a terrace above the square, and an hour at the Spanish Mosque viewpoint before the drive back. If you would rather spend the whole day photographing the blue lanes, that is fine too.
